True beauty is found not in outward appearance but in a heart formed by God, marked by steady character and quiet strength.

1 Peter 3:3-4 ³ Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— ⁴ but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.

There is nothing wrong about making oneself look more attractive through expensive clothing and jewelry. External adorning is just as important for women in modern society just as it was in ancient times. What is sinful is causing the heart to be wrapped up in the outward presentation of the self. Those who have made outward beauty their idol often say they don’t consider aesthetics that important, but offer to remove them and you will hit them where it hurts.

Peter directs his readers, particularly Christian wives, to adorn themselves with something that lasts forever and cannot be taken away from them—the grace of the Holy Spirit. The chief care of the believer must not be their outward appearance but the careful ordering of their inner heart. Instead of busying ourselves with external ornamentation that has no eternal value, let us invest in things that build character. 

This adorning of the inner self is not limited to personal spiritual discipline, but is manifested through proper conduct and attitude, showing itself in the way we behave and carry ourselves. When the heart is being transformed by the Holy Spirit, it naturally overflows into gentleness, patience, and wisdom in everyday life. True adornment is seen not in what we wear, but in how we treat others and reflect Christ in our actions.

All of this for the glory of God, for good works flowing from genuine faith is always precious in the eyes of God. This is not to say that wives, or Christians in general, should avoid making themselves beautiful and attractive. Rather, wives should not focus only on the outward beauty while neglecting the inner character, for it is the latter that is most attractive and what God finds truly valuable and what lasts.

Lord, shape my heart so that true beauty flows from within, formed by Your Spirit. Help me value what You value and walk in a character that honors You daily.
