True religion is not found in empty sets of rules but in active compassion for the afflicted and maintaining a heart unstained by the corruption of the world.
James 1:27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.
Genuine worship is more than outward performance. It must penetrate the heart and result in kindness and compassion if it’s going to please the Father in heaven. When a person is truly born again, he is transformed into a condition fit to approach God, and his worship transcends mere ritual. Not through his efforts, but through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
This transformation creates in the believer a desire to help others. Regardless of the era and the circumstance, a true Christian will bear a distinguishing mark: concern for the needy. Among the early believers, the needy primarily included widows and orphans who often found themselves on the margins of society.
God has always had a preferential option for the poor and the needy. As followers of Christ, we must also actively look for ways to come to their aid. Only then can we keep ourselves unstained by the world, which often favors the rich over the poor.
It’s easy to think that religious observance is what will keep the soul unblemished from the world. It is not so, according to James, who emphasizes that keeping a moral attitude, as evidenced by a concern for the lowly and needy, is what will keep us in harmony with God’s will. The true religion that is measured in God’s eyes as unstained from the world? Faith in Jesus Christ bearing the fruit of good works.
Heavenly Father, help me become the essence of true religion. I want to live out my faith in genuine, active compassion for the poor and vulnerable. May the love of Christ lead me to serve others and help keep my heart pure and separate from the world.
