Those who desire to teach God’s Word will answer to Christ, the impartial judge.
James 3:1 Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.
Teaching and preaching in the congregation carries heavy accountability. It is a sacred calling and should not be taken lightly. In Scripture, prophets, apostles, and elders were expected to lead with accuracy and love for truth. Their influence formed God’s people and carried far-reaching consequences. While James does not discourage those who sincerely desire to serve in the church, he reminds us of the seriousness of the task.
This warning remains relevant today, particularly in a culture where many pursue the pulpit to gain fame and applause. The role of shepherding God’s people has been reduced to celebrity status, and ministry has been turned into performance. No wonder the church is not being taken seriously.
James reminds us that those who desire to teach or speak publicly will answer to Christ, not to people. A true teacher of God’s Word is known by his purity, not his platform. He is known for his character, not his charisma. Christ, the impartial judge, will evaluate him not by the loudness of his voice but by his faithfulness in living the Word he proclaims.
Are you a teacher of Scripture or desire to be one? You must examine your motives before standing in the pulpit to speak. Ask yourself whether you are drawing attention to Christ or to yourself. Be ready to speak the truth even when it’s unpopular. Live the message you are teaching.
Teaching God’s Word is a wonderful calling. Pursue it, but be sure to stand on sincerity and not self-promotion. Our Lord requires faithfulness over brilliance and integrity over influence. Let us walk in reverent fear of the Lord, speaking and teaching with both grace and conviction!
Father, in my desire to teach your Word, may you help keep my heart pure and my motives clean. Guard my heart from pride and the temptation of being recognized. Teach me to handle the truth of your Word with humility, to speak it with compassion, and to live it with sincerity. Amen.
