Doubt & Devotion

James 3:14-17 ¹⁴ But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. ¹⁵ This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. ¹⁶ For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. ¹⁷ But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.

The society we live in places a huge value on confidence and self-promotion. It often rewards those who seem to be the most knowledgeable and loud in a group. True wisdom, however, is not measured by how much a person knows. Real understanding doesn’t show itself through loud arguments or clever reasoning. A wise person is recognized by their actions more than their words. They are often calm and humble and reflect a life shaped by fear of the Lord and compassion toward others.

There is a counterfeit wisdom that looks appealing. It’s one that is driven by self-interest and the desire to impress. Such wisdom may appear sharp and persuasive, but the Bible calls it demonic. It’s the kind of wisdom that springs forth from ambition and the need to be seen and admired rather than a heart to serve. This false wisdom is the source of jealousy and contention even among believers. You will see it manifest when people compete for recognition, fight to prove superiority, or pull and tear others down to lift themselves up. 

While today’s generation puts a lot of emphasis on self-expression and “rightness,” James reminds us that wisdom from above is observed in meekness. One need not raise his voice, pull others down, and win an argument to show the world he is wise and deserving of recognition. To be wise is to be peaceable, fair, and considerate, especially in the midst of tension. 

The wisdom we want is the wisdom from above. It’s the kind of wisdom that gives birth to peace, fairness, and mercy. People who possess this wisdom are humble, patient, and kind, even when they are challenged. Wisdom that comes from God is the exact opposite of the wisdom that comes from the world: it reconciles rather than divides, listens rather than boasts, and heals rather than harms.

Father, grant me the wisdom from above that produces humility and peace. Remove pride and jealousy from my heart, and let my words and deeds reflect the gentle wisdom that comes from your Holy Spirit. Amen.
