Rejecting friendship with the world means choosing Christ’s priorities over society’s self-seeking desires and values.
James 4:4-5 4You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 5 Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”?
The Bible often describes unfaithfulness to God as spiritual adultery. Just as Israel has turned from Yahweh and sought security from other nations and gods, believers today can slowly drift from God and toward the ways of society. James calls this “friendship with the world.” This kind of friendship isn’t casual contact. It’s adopting the attitudes, goals, methods, and desires of this culture.
The warning may seem harsh, but it’s actually an urgent reminder for Christians that unfaithfulness to God occurs when believers align their lives more with the world than with Christ. Society’s thinking easily appeals to the desires of the flesh. Its values push people toward self-promotion, just as the Israelites looked to foreign nations rather than to the one true and living God. When we allow the world’s influences to shape our priorities, we eventually set our eyes away from heavenly things and begin to store up treasures on earth rather than heaven.
This danger is just as real today. Our culture constantly tempts us to buy its viewpoint, to measure success by possessions, choose companions who encourage compromise, and seek approval from those who have no regard for spiritual things. Left unchecked, this self-seeking attitude gives birth to jealousy and incessant greed.
Pursuing friendship with the world demands a compromise of loyalty unacceptable to God. True love for God, expressed in our willingness to submit to his will, always manifests in the form of obedience. The Christian who carelessly pursues the world’s ways is drifting away from the One who calls them to be “no part of the world.”
If we consider ourselves disciples of Christ, we must always examine whether or not our decisions and associations reflect God’s priorities or the world’s. This doesn’t mean we should isolate ourselves from society. It means we must refrain from letting worldly attitudes take over our hearts. It means choosing Christ when the world pressures us to do otherwise. When we do that, we show that our loyalty and devotion belong to Christ alone. Besides, friendship with God is worth far more than the empty rewards this world has to offer.
Father, please guard my heart from the pressures of society. Help me say no to envy and the desire for the world’s approval. I desire to be loyal to you, with my motives pure and my ways aligned with your will. I want to be a friend of God rather than a friend of this world. Amen.
