Doubt & Devotion

James 5:13-15 ¹³ Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. ¹⁴ Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. ¹⁵ And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

Life is beautiful. It brings joy and healing. At the same time, it brings moments of trouble and sickness. Each of these conditions calls the heart in a different direction. Joy drives the believer to praise while suffering and pain us to prayer. During times of weakness, one is pushed to seek help not only from God but from others. Whether in suffering, joy, or sickness, God intends for us to bring every circumstance to Him.

In times of illness, the early Christians surrounded those who were suffering with prayer and presence. They cared for the sick to remind them that God has not abandoned them. Believers today need this same kind of support. It’s easy to get overwhelmed when one is in isolation and fear, but the prayers of brothers and sisters in Christ can bring hope and healing. This prayer of faith does not depend on emotions or rituals. They are steady, sincere, and confident that God listens and responds.

The prayer of faith is accompanied by anointing with oil, a familiar custom in ancient times. Oil in itself has no power to heal, but it was a tangible reminder that the sick believer was not alone. When oil comes into contact with the sick person’s skin, the sick person is lifted not only physically, but emotionally and spiritually. That way, the prayer of faith becomes a channel through which Christ strengthens and raises up those who are overcome by weakness.

Many in ancient times believed that sickness was a result of hidden sin. Therefore, when a sick person was reassured that their sins had been forgiven, they felt as if they had also received physical healing. Yet, the prayer of faith reaches deeper because it brings the whole person before God. Through shared prayer and the support of other believers, the sick person experiences the restoring and healing power of God.

Father, teach me to have compassion for those who are sick, to draw near to them and hold them in prayer when they are weak. Help me offer my presence and a heart that reflects your character. Amen.
