Prepare Your Mind

Prepare Your Mind

Prepare your mind to remain faithful to Christ amidst hostile opposition.

1 Peter 1:13 Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

The mind is of great importance in the Christian life. Genuine faith is not blind but intelligent and informed. It is with the mind that we make religious claims intelligible and coherent, and it is with the mind that we discern truth from error. We live in a society where the pressure to let go of objective truth is intense. Thus, it is crucial now more than ever for believers to intentionally engage our minds to stay grounded in the truth of Scripture.

To prepare our minds for action is to “gird up the loins” of our minds, which is the equivalent of rolling up one’s sleeve in preparation for a strenuous activity. Indeed, even though we can rest and relax knowing that the work of Christ is complete, we are to be vigilant and ready, prepared to engage activity in our faith.

The Israelites were aware of their impending deliverance from Egypt. Their liberation and redemption from bondage is at hand. Yet, they didn’t relax. God commanded them to eat the Passover meal with their loins girded, their shoes on their feet, and their staff in their hands. That way, there will be no time wasted for them as they eat and leave for the Promised Land.

For us, New Covenant believers, our minds are alert for one thing: the hope that comes from the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Our hope is focused not on a physical deliverance from slavery, but a spiritual one. We have grace in the present, but our hope is grounded in another form of grace that comes with the return of Christ. When that day arrives, our hope will become a reality. For now, that same hope sustains us in the difficult task of remaining faithful to Christ in the midst of the hostile opposition of this present culture.

Father, help me prepare my mind for action at all times, intentionally engaging with Your Word so that my faith is grounded in truth. Grant me the grace to set my hope fully on the grace that comes with the return of my Lord and Savior, Jesus. Strengthen me to remain faithful until that day comes. Amen.
