Wisdom grows when we stop leaning on ourselves and begin trusting God fully.
Proverbs 3:7–8
7 Be not wise in your own eyes;
fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.
8 It will be healing to your flesh
and refreshment to your bones.
Opening Reflection
After learning that wisdom begins with reverence and is sustained by trust, our attention is now turned to a subtler but persistent danger: confidence in our own wisdom. We begin the year with good intentions. Before long, we start relying on our own judgment and forget that it is God who guides us and corrects our paths. With confidence in our decision-making abilities, we start assuming we know what’s best. We begin telling ourselves again that we have learned enough to manage life on our own. “It worked in the past, so it will probably work again this time.”
Today’s reading reminds us that true growth in one’s walk with God does not occur through developing greater confidence in oneself, but through increasing one’s humility. Wisdom is not thinking that we know things better because of our educational background and life experiences. Wisdom is rightly placing ourselves under God’s care. And the promise that flows from humility is not just knowing what to do, but experiencing peace and well-being from the inside out.
Unpacking the Verse
We often hold ourselves as wise, but that is the opposite of fearing the Lord. “Be not wise in your own eyes” is not a warning against self-confidence, but against replacing reverence for God with the mindset that you can accomplish things without Him. It’s a warning against prioritizing human judgment over divine guidance. Scripture repeatedly warns us of the dangers of this mindset because it places us at the center where God is supposed to be.
Once again, we encounter the expression “fear of the Lord.” We have learned on Day 1 that fearing the Lord is not equivalent to fearing punishment. It’s about moral orientation or the intentional and voluntary turning away of oneself from evil. That said, wisdom is not just knowledge but ethical alignment.
The result of fearing the Lord and turning away from evil is twofold: healing to the flesh and refreshment to the bones. While it’s described in physical language, it goes beyond surface-level health and wellness. The word “healing” here means more than just recovery from physical illness but carries the sense of restoration and deliverance. The word “refreshment,” on the other hand, speaks of renewal, something that revives and sustains.
Together, they describe a healthy condition of being and reminds us that obedience to God’s wisdom that keeps us from doing what is evil produces both physical healing and inward peace.
Application for January 4
We often measure growth and maturity by confidence and self-sufficiency. We may think we are growing spiritually because we no longer “need” prayer, correction, or dependence on God, We feel like we can handle life on autopilot. As a result, we rely on our own judgment.
However, Scripture offers a different vision. Spiritual maturity always begins with humility. It’s the willingness to acknowledge that we don’t know everything and that we need God to guide us from beginning to end.
Today’s passage challenges us to resist self-reliance and to turn to revere God instead. It reminds us that turning away from evil does not always mean avoiding obvious wrongdoing, but choosing God’s way over our own. It involves letting go of pride, and humbling ourselves before a God who is all-knowing.
A simple way to practice this today:
- Notice where pride quietly shapes your decisions
- Ask God to expose areas where self-confidence has replaced trust
- Choose reverence over self-assurance, even in small matters
Humility does not weaken us. It heals us.
Heart Check
- In what areas of my life have I been “wise in my own eyes”?
- What is one attitude or behaviour God may be asking me to turn away from?
- How might humility lead to deeper peace in my life?
Prayer
Lord, guard my heart from pride and self-reliance.
Teach me to fear You rightly and to turn away from what draws me from You.
Bring healing to my inner life and peace to my soul.
Help me grow in wisdom through humility and obedience.
Amen.
