January 13 The Influence You Keep

January 13 The Influence You Keep

Who you walk with quietly shapes who you become.

Proverbs 13:20
Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise,
but the companion of fools will suffer harm.

Opening Reflection

Motivational speaker Jim Rohn once said that the people we choose to walk with shape us more than we realize. And he is not wrong. Wisdom is primarily a personal pursuit. We gain it through study, prayer, and the choices we make every day. However, wisdom is also communal.

We don’t become the people we meet through occasional or brief encounters, but the company we “walk with”— share direction and spend companionship with—leaves its mark not just on our habits, but our mindset and character.

Unpacking the Verse

When we choose to walk with the wise, we also become wise. Wisdom is not transferred instantly, but is formed over time. Today’s passage makes it clear that influence is unavoidable. It’s not a matter of whether we will be shaped by others, but a matter of who will shape us and how. In essence, association has the power to mold character.

The “wise” refers to people of sound judgment. They are those who not only seek wisdom but also teach it to others. When we walk with such people, we learn from them and receive encouragement. Over time, we become just like them. Their principles are reinforced in us, and before we know it, we have already adopted their healthy habits. We truly see the fruit of the promise that we can walk with the wise and become wise.

By contrast, those who spend time with fools “will suffer harm.” To suffer harm means to come into trouble or fall into evil. The passage isn’t warning against mere social embarrassment, but real moral, spiritual, and practical damage. Being foolish has real consequences, and the more time we spend with fools, the more our discernment weakens. We must be careful because corruption doesn’t happen overnight. It happens gradually, and before you know it, your sensitivity to evil has grown dull, and your self-control has weakened.

This doesn’t mean we should isolate ourselves in a bubble. It means we should practice discernment and choose to be with the right company.

Application for January 13

This 2026, challenge yourself to take your relationships seriously. Whether we acknowledge it or not, the people we associate with and spend time with, trust, and listen to influence our direction. The Bible doesn’t say we should look for perfection in others. However, we need to be wise when choosing people to mentor us or walk alongside us in life. Such individuals must have a commitment to truth, growth, and fear of the Lord.

That said, choosing wise companionship may not always be easy. In fact, it may sometimes feel costly because it may require us to set aside our ego, distance ourselves from familiar but stagnant relationships, and endure seasons of solitude while we wait for the right people to arrive.

But then again, God’s Word is clear: association shapes direction.

A simple way to practice this today:

  • Reflect on who has the strongest influence on your thinking and choices
  • Seek out voices that encourage wisdom, not compromise
  • Be intentional about the paths you walk together with others

Relationships do not merely accompany us—they guide us.

Heart Check

  • Who am I regularly walking with, and where is that path leading?
  • What influences have been shaping my habits and attitudes?
  • How might choosing wiser companionship change my direction?

Prayer

Lord, give me discernment in my relationships.
Lead me to walk with those who seek wisdom and truth.
Protect my heart from influences that draw me away from You.
Shape my life through companionship that honours You.
Amen.
