True safety is not found in escape, but in running to God.
Proverbs 18:10
The name of the Lord is a strong tower;
the righteous run into it and are safe.
Opening Reflection
It is in the nature of all living things to look for shelter when danger is nearby. God Himself has built this reflex into creation. The question is not whether we will run somewhere when pressure rises and our instinct kicks in. The question is where we will run.
Some fortresses promise security but often disappoint. Others look impressive from the outside yet collapse under real strain. Today’s passage sets before us a refuge that never fails: the name of the Lord.
Unpacking the Verse
Readers from the ancient world would readily understand the image of a strong tower. In the early times, towers were a place of real protection. They were built elevated, fortified, and inaccessible to attackers. Now, you may wonder why the verse doesn’t directly say the Lord is a strong tower. Instead, it says the Lord’s name is a strong tower. That’s because God’s name represents the full revelation of He is. It represents His faithfulness, holiness, mercy, and saving power. Every fresh revelation of His name not only strengthens our confidence but renews our faith.
When God’s children are in danger, they can run into this tower and are promised protection. We don’t fear not because the threat disappears, but because we are secure in the knowledge of where our safety lies.
The world offers security in the form of wealth and human strength, but it is false security. They may appear solid from a distance, but they ultimately rest on self-confidence and are therefore limited.
On the contrary, the name of the Lord offers divine protection. It is open to all who trust in God, and no distance, timing, or even sin can prevent entry. However, God is the sanctuary only to the repentant sinner and not the presumptuous. True safety is found only in humble trust and never in self-assurance.
Safety doesn’t simply mean escape from trouble. Danger always lurks outside the strong tower, but inside, there is peace of mind and heart, freedom from fear, and security from condemnation. The opposition may remain, but the soul whose dwelling place is God is fortified and safe.
Application for Day 20
When the year feels heavy, we often run to quick solutions. Worse, we forget that we have a Father who cares for us, and we rely on our own efforts. We run to overwork, believing longer hours will save a failing business. As parents, we tighten every decision out of fear for our children’s future.
Pressure can build up real fast, and when that happens, we retreat into worry, control, and self-reliance, hoping they will protect us. Our initial responses aren’t always wrong, but they are insufficient as hiding places.
There is only one place where we can be truly safe, and that is God’s presence. As followers of Christ, we are not called to outrun trouble. In fact, troubles are a common theme in the life of a believer and are to be expected. The good news is that we have a God we can run to when things get tough.
If only we stop trying to hold life together and trust the strength, mercy, and faithfulness of our Lord, we will discover what true security is.
Practical ways to run into the strong tower today:
- When anxiety rises, speak God’s character aloud—His faithfulness, mercy, and power
- When decisions feel overwhelming, pray before acting
- When fear presses in, choose trust over self-reliance
The righteous are not those without trouble, but those who know where safety truly is.
Heart Check
- Where do I instinctively run when pressure rises?
- What false refuges have I relied on for security?
- How can I make turning to God my first response rather than my last?
Prayer
Lord, You are my strong tower.
When fear rises and strength fades, draw my heart toward You.
Teach me to run to Your name, not to my own defenses.
Let Your peace guard my heart and steady my steps.
Amen.
