January 23 Trusting God’s Guidance

God does not always explain the path—but He faithfully directs every step.

Proverbs 20:24
Man’s steps are ordained by the Lord;
how then can man understand his own way?

Opening Reflection

We often assume that if we make the right decisions, everything will fall into place and our life will follow a straight line. However, that is not always the case. In fact, our lives rarely unfold that way. That’s because our steps come from the Lord.

For that reason, the full meaning of our path will remain beyond our grasp. We may move forward with diligence, but we will never know why some doors close, why timing shifts, and why some turns are inevitable. This is not disorder. This is the natural condition of a life lived under God’s governance.

Unpacking the Verse

Our “goings” are said to belong to the Lord. It doesn’t mean that we are only passive instruments but that God is sovereign and we should humble ourselves before him. Human freedom is God’s gift to His creation. As a matter of fact, Scripture assumes it. Humans choose, act, and move intentionally.

Yet, God’s Word also insists that underneath and beyond the choices humans make, a higher ordering hand is at work. That God is sovereign doesn’t mean He ignores human will. Trusting Him means recognizing that His sovereignty does not override our will but enables it. He also removes distortion, softens resistance, and illuminates paths.

The question that follows isn’t distressing at all but enlightening. It directs us to the mystery of the providence of God. Have you noticed that much of God’s guidance only becomes clear in hindsight? All the detours, the delays, and even the contradictions later reveal themselves as God’s protection and care.

The Bible is full of stories emphasizing this truth. We read of meetings that appear coincidental, such as in the case of Ruth and Boaz. There’s also the story of Joseph and Moses that started with a lot of setbacks but later advanced greater purposes. In every circumstance, humans can move freely. Yet, it is God who quietly orders the outcome.

Application for Day 23

We love saying that we trust God, but oftentimes, we demand to understand the bigger picture before we fully surrender. We wait for the dust to settle to see things clearly before committing, and we wait for assurance before obeying. Today’s passage invites us to put our trust in God without fearing the outcome.

In our day-to-day life, this may look like making decisions faithfully without full visibility. It could mean making a huge business decision that glorifies God although we’re not sure what the results will be. It could also mean choosing a more God-honoring way of treating a spouse or a child even if it means giving up some things.

God’s Word doesn’t call us to obey mindlessly, but to act with humility, fully aware that understanding may come much later, or even not at all.

When the path feels confusing, Scripture does not promise explanation, but it does promise presence, direction, and care.

A simple way to practice this today:

  • Acknowledge your plans, but hold them loosely
  • Pray for guidance without demanding immediate clarity
  • Choose obedience even when outcomes remain uncertain

Heart Check

  • Where am I demanding understanding before trust?
  • How do I respond when God’s guidance feels indirect or unclear?
  • What would it look like to walk faithfully without full explanation?

Prayer

Lord,
You know the way even when I do not.
Teach me to walk in trust rather than control.
Guide my steps, steady my heart,
and help me rest in Your wise and faithful care.
Amen.
